DIY – IKEA BAR HACK

If you haven’t been following my journey through Instagram you might not be aware that I just moved back to Canada. The relocation meant a clean slate which gave us the opportunity to make our home the way we wanted. One of the things I wanted to create was a DIY IKEA hack bar.

Since there was a budget I searched around on Pinterest and found so many IKEA hacks. Our entire apartment has pretty much been DIY… it did take us a WHILE to get it all together, but it was so worth it

I have seen this bar/cart hack done in different versions which were appealing but I didn’t want to lose storage. That is why I wanted to create a bottle holder box for storage while still giving us additional shelving.

SKELETON

I ended up using the VITTSJÖ laptop table in the black-brown color for a more modern farmhouse theme throughout. This table was really the skeleton of the bar. All the steps were followed but left the glass off to add the wood for the topping. IKEA HACK - BAR - #IKEA #IKEAhack #IKEAbarhack #bar #bar/cart #cart #winecart #winebar

MATERIALS

For the wood I went with two different kinds of material. One which would be the more aesthetic, and the other which had more structure for holding the bottles.

Aesthetic

  • WHITE WASH BARN BOARD – I love the farmhouse feel look and wanted something that was already whitewashed so I didn’t have to add more steps to this project. Was super happy when I found this.

Bottle holder

  • Sanded Plywood and or MDF –  for this portion I used a mixture of plywood for the otter box, ends and the dividers but for the backing we used MDF. The reason for the backing was because I didn’t want the bottles to fall or scratch the wall.
MEASUREMENTS

Home Depot could cut most of the wood cutting for a small charge, but I was on my own for the notches.

I started with the largest piece of wood and nailed in the outer ends and moved my way inwards. After, I put the opposite long piece on and then the back part. All together it took about 30 minutes.

I then spray painted the bottle holder black so it tied in the with the whole look. The barn-wood was painted just at the ends (where the cuts happened) with regular white wall paint diluted in water. Painting the barn-wood kept it consistent with the white-wash the wood already had.

STEMWARE RACK

Believe it or not but this part which you would think is the easiest was the most time consuming. I tried different stemware racks and they didn’t work with the IKEA desk. This under cabinet stemware rack on amazon fit PERFECTLY!!

PUTTING THE BAR TOGETHER

This by far was the best part of it all… means it was all coming together. The top pieces of wood were secured by double-sided tape strips on each end, which connected the wood and metal together. After, the desk was flipped over and the stemware was drilled on. Once flipped back the remaining pieces of barn-wood and bottle holder box was added.

I ABSOLUTELY love my DIY IKEA bar and can’t wait to start filling it up with wine/liqueurs and start having people over. Stay tune as later on I will create a post on bar-ware must have. Which will have everything you need to stock the perfect bar.

I have a quick question. Did you somehow fasten the bottom shelf/bottle holder to the steel frame? Or is the weight of it being held by the original steel crossbars of the desk? Thanks! Great hack!

    1. Daniela Sanchez

The weight itself secured it, we have moved around the bar throughout the home and have had no issues with it moving or falling. Good luck with it!
