As we transition into fall/winter so does our skin. You most likely don’t know this; I was in the beauty industry for over 10 years. I learned a lot of tips and tricks throughout that time and the compliment I received the most was “I want my skin to look like yours”. Having a good skincare routine is crucial, so it could be seen as an investment. Let’s talk about what products are my MUSTS for this fall’s skincare transition.
PREPPING YOUR SKIN FOR FALL/WINTER
As the seasons change and the weather gets colder, we need to prep our skin for the winter months. Exfoliating is the key for a year round glow; it becomes even more important in fall as you need to take off the dead skin from the summer to have a new canvas so we can hydrate properly for winter.
The moment I discovered the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Peel, my life was changed! They help remove dead skin, erase fine lines, wrinkles, and enlarged pores, creating an even skin tone and texture. I do the five-day-pack twice a year to prep my skin for the season change and then one treatment twice a month for the rest of the year. The peels are an amazing treatment to do and remove all the dead skin. They offer two different strengths in the formulas, so make sure to start with the lower formula and see how it goes.
After doing the peels, your skin will be ready for your new skincare routine with the ability to absorb all of the benefits from your products.
THE SKINCARE BASICS
We have all grown up being told that we need to cleanse and moisturize; what has been underrated is the importance of toning. Toner is extremely important because once you remove all the dirt from your face, the PH levels change and we need to bring them back to normal. This is where the toner comes into play in the skincare routine. Make sure the toner you use doesn’t have alcohol in it as it will dry out your skin.
After cleansing and toning, next should be your serum. Depending on your needs this will vary. Serums are a lightweight moisturizer that penetrates deeper into the skin to deliver its benefits. During the winter months I alternate between two different serums, La Roche Posey’s Effaclar serum and Darphin Hydraskin serum. I love these two because I get different benefits from them, the Hydraskin is for hydration and it is water based, not oil. While the Effaclar is an anti-aging serum that smooths fine lines, diminishes blemishes while brightening the skin.
Moisturizers will also vary depending on your needs, you might want something completely anti-aging or mattifying, the options are endless. Depending on what moisturizer you end up going with, make sure that they are water-based and not oil. The oil could lead to clogged pores and breakouts, make sure you check those labels. The same goes with eye creams, you can find so many options depending on your needs. Last, but not least, is sunblock. It should always be added after your moisturizer and before your makeup.
BUDGETING FOR YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE
It is not cheap to have a good skincare routine, and what’s great is that you get to choose where to spend your money. Depending on your preferences, the price tag can start to add up. The best way to offset that is by picking your products wisely. I suggest not spending too much money on your cleanser, toner, and exfoliator, as their benefits do not change as much as the price increases. I have been using Biotherm for my cleanser, toner and exfoliator, and love it!
Serums, face, and eye creams are where it gets tricky. Due to using two different serums, I decided that one of them had to be very affordable while the other one is pricier. For the face and eye cream I went with a mid-range price point as I wanted to have my skin needs met and not break the bank. Sunblocks can really vary in price point, I absolutely love my Anthelios Ultra-Fluid. It is super fast-absorbing, has a matte finish and does’t leave a white film on your skin.
Next, it’s the peels (which you must try) and cleansing brush. I know that cleaning brushes are generally very expensive, I chose to take this leap of faith for the Foreo as I loved the results I saw. This is a personal choice that you will get to make based on your skincare needs. I have tried several different ones and by far the winner in my eyes is the Foreo Mini Luna brush. There are a lot of options out there for cleansing brushes and they all vary in prices and performance.
DO I REALLY NEED TO WEAR SUNBLOCK DURING THE WINTER?
YES!!! Some people are surprised to hear that just because it is winter we don’t have to worry about sunblock anymore, but the sun reflection on the snow can damage our skin just as much as in summer time. It is very important to continue wearing sunblock year round. And remember, sunblock goes on after moisturizer and before makeup!
Here is a few reasons why you should always wear sunblock on your face:
- Protects you from harmful UV rays
- Prevents premature ageing
- Lowers chances of getting skin cancer
- Prevents brown spots and skin discoloration
MY ‘MUST HAVE’ SKINCARE PRODUCTS
These are all amazing products and some are more expensive than others. I have tried a lot of different products and these are by far the best mix for me given their benefits.
- CLEANSER, TONER, EXFOLIATOR, SERUM 1, SERUM 2, FACE CREAM, EYE SERUM/CREAM, FACE MIST, SUNBLOCK, FACE PEEL
Do you tend to be loyal to just one brand? As you can see from this post I am not, hehe! I believe in trying out products and seeing what works for you and your skin. It honestly took me a while to get to this point where I understood my skin needs. It hasn’t always been an easy road to know what works and what doesn’t, but the trial and error paid off.
What is your fall skincare routine like? Any products I should give a try?
